This medicinal mushroom broth recipe is one of my go-to healing soups for the fall and winter! If you come to our house in the cooler months, I’ll always have a pot of this mushroom broth bubbling on the back burner in the kitchen. (I’m definitely part Hobbit.)
This medicinal mushroom broth is super simple to make. This post is more method than precise recipe. Feel free to experiment and substitute your favorite mushrooms if you don’t have these on hand. (LMK in comments below what you use!)
I use a handful of each of the mushrooms in a 2-quart pot, but scale this medicinal mushroom broth recipe to suit your needs and taste:
- The more mushrooms/less water, the more concentrated your broth will be.
- The fewer mushrooms/more water, the more dilute your broth will be.
Instructions below!
Medicinal mushroom broth
Turkey tail mushrooms
Lion’s mane mushrooms
Shiitake mushrooms
Maitake mushrooms
A few cloves organic garlic
A small finger of fresh, organic ginger
Whole black peppercorns, to taste
Sea salt, to taste
Spring or distilled water
- Put all your ingredients in a pot.
- Bring to a boil over high heat.
- Knock the heat down so that the water just simmers.
- Cover and simmer for at least 60 minutes.
- Ladle through a strainer into a mug (you want the broth only).
- Add more water to your pot to replace what you took out and continue to simmer. You can keep this broth going all day like this (ladle some out, add more water). The mushrooms have a lot to give! When your broth gets much lighter in color, that’s a good clue that you should make a fresh pot.
- Add a little more sea salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper to your mug, if you like.
- Enjoy!
Medicinal mushroom broth serving ideas
I drink this straight, in a mug, garnished with a little cayenne and sometimes enriched with some grass-fed butter or coconut oil.
You can also use this broth as a base to cook:
- A heartier soup or stew (mushrooms are a great flavor companion to meats)
- Rice
- Beans
- Pasta
- Couscous
- Veggies
- Sauces (try adding to tomato sauce with sliced porcini)
- Gravies
Healing properties of medicinal mushrooms
Mushrooms contain a whole host of beneficial properties. They’re the spore-bearing, fruiting body of a fungus. The actual fungus lives below the soil or tree, in a web of mycelium. That’s a network that connects all forest species and helps them exchange nutrients and information.
They’re packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, along with protein and fiber (and not to mention, they’re a flavor POWERHOUSE).

Energetic properties of mushrooms
Mushrooms remind us that all beings are woven together in a magical tapestry of life. In folklore, a circle of mushrooms is an otherworldly portal to the Faery Realm.
