Why crystals and white light bubbles often fall short (and what to do instead)

You’ve probably tried the crystals. Maybe you’ve got black tourmaline in your pocket, selenite on your windowsill, and a collection of bracelets you were told would help.

You’ve visualized white light. You’ve saged the hell out of your apartment. You’ve started carrying your amethyst to family dinners.

And you still come home feeling like you got run over.

So here’s what I want to talk to you about.

Not another list of crystals. Not another light-bubble meditation that leaves you feeling vaguely hopeful for twenty minutes and then doesn’t hold. (I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love that.)

But I want to talk about why energy protection often doesn’t work…and then get into what actually does.

First, Let’s Talk About What’s Actually Happening

First, Let's Talk About What's Actually Happening

Raise your hand if you love going out and about but generally hate to spend a lot of time around a lot of people. (It’s me.)

You might leave a crowded event feeling drained, scattered, irritable, anxious, or strangely emotional without understanding why.

You get home and you just need to lie flat on the floor for an hour. Your person, who was at the same event, is totally fine.

What gives?

This isn’t weakness. It’s not “being too sensitive.” It’s your nervous system doing exactly what nervous systems do. Picking up information from the environment and from other people.

Humans are wired for co-regulation. Our nervous systems are in constant conversation with each other, long before the rational mind gets involved.

This is the part where science and animism shake hands.

From a physiological standpoint, your nervous system is continuously reading social cues, tone of voice, facial micro-expressions, even heart rate variability…and that all happens mostly below the level of conscious awareness.

Polyvagal theory calls this “neuroception.” You’re not imagining the impact other people have on your body. You’re perceiving it.

From a shamanic and energetic standpoint, we’d say that energy is real, it moves, it has direction, and unresolved energy from other people (that means their grief, their anxiety, their anger, their need) can attach.

Not always intentionally. Sometimes just because you were wide open and they were leaking. Make sense?

Both frameworks point to the same practical reality: Your field is porous, and something needs to change.

Energy 101: What Energy Really Is (and Why You Can Feel It)

Why Energetic Protection Often Doesn’t Work

Why Energetic Protection Often Doesn't Work

Here’s the honest answer: A lot of energetic protection practices are more performative when they really need to be physiological.

Visualizing a white bubble of light is lovely. It’s genuinely useful as a symbolic act. And, don’t get me wrong. I don’t dismiss symbolic acts. They’re how we talk to the parts of the brain that run below language.

But if your nervous system is stuck in chronic sympathetic overdrive, if your boundaries are a concept rather than a felt sense in your body, if you’re doing the practice with one eye on your phone…the white light probably isn’t going to do much.

Protection isn’t primarily a visualization exercise. It’s a state of being.

The body has to be involved. The nervous system has to be involved. And your actual relationship with your own energy (your ability to sense what’s yours and what isn’t) has to be developed over time.

It’s a skill. Like any skill, it takes practice, not just intention.

This is where most of the content in this space stops short. It gives you the tool without building the foundation.

Build Your Foundation First

Build the Foundation First

Before you can protect your energy, you need to know what your energy actually feels like when it’s yours.

This sounds obvious. It isn’t.

If you’ve spent years absorbing other people’s emotional states…growing up in a household with unpredictable moods, working in a high-stress environment, being the person everyone turns to…you may have very little reference point for what neutral actually feels like in your body.

You’re so used to carrying things that aren’t yours that you don’t notice the weight.

Try this.

Get quiet. Not meditating, not trying to think of nothing. Just sit with the intention of noticing what’s present.

Where do you feel tension? Where do you feel ease? What’s the quality of your breath? What emotions are moving through, and do they actually belong to your life right now — or did they hitch a ride from somewhere else?

This is the beginning of discernment. You can’t protect what you can’t sense.

5 Energetic Clearing Techniques That Actually Work for Me: A Practitioner’s Honest List

5 Energetic Clearing Techniques That Actually Work for Me: A Practitioner's Honest List

Here’s a quick list of some of the things that have worked for me, after nearly thirty years of practice, and for the people I work with.

1. Breathwork: Non-Negotiably

This is my lived experience. I can drop my systolic blood pressure (the top number on your reading) 20 to 30 points in just about a minute with focused breath.

I share this not to be boasty, but because it illustrates something really important: Your breath directly helps regulate your nervous system. And your nervous system is your primary energetic interface with the world.

When you consciously shift your breathing (that means exhales that are longer than your inhales), you start to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

You shift from threat-detection mode to rest-and-integrate mode. From that state, your energy starts to naturally consolidate. And you can stop broadcasting and start containing.

Try this before you walk into a difficult environment. Do it in the bathroom at the family gathering. Do it in your car before you go inside. It takes about sixty seconds and I’ve found that it actually works beautifully for me.

2. Grounding: Not as Metaphor, as Practice

Grounding is perhaps the most overused word in spiritual wellness.

It’s also one of the most genuinely important practices there is. The problem is it’s often taught as a visualization (imagine roots going into the earth, which can be helpful), but without the body piece.

Your body needs to be involved.

Feet on the ground, actual earth if possible.

Physical contact. Slow breath. Weight dropping down through your legs, your feet, into the floor.

The sensation of gravity.

This isn’t mystical. It’s proprioception. (Which is a fancy word for the body’s ability to sense its own position and movements in space, which allows for balance and coordination without relying solely on visual input. You with me?)

You’re reminding your nervous system where you are, and that you’re safe in your body right now.

When your energy is scattered up in your head and you’re leaking into the room, you can’t protect yourself.

Come down first. Then build your container.

3. Intentional Containment (Not Armor)

Here’s a distinction that took me years to fully understand. There’s a difference between protection and armor.

Armor is kind of a trauma response. It’s the energetic equivalent of walls. Nothing gets in, but nothing flows freely either. It’s exhausting to maintain, and it tends to cut you off from your own intuition.

Containment is different.

Think of it less like a fortress and more like a cell membrane that’s selectively permeable.

You choose what you let in. You’re not bracing against the world. You’re just super clear about what belongs in your field and what doesn’t.

This is cultivated through repeated practice of sensing your own energy, pulling it back to yourself, and reinforcing the sense of your own distinct presence.

Some people use visualization as a tool for this, which is great, and when that visualization is anchored in a real felt sense in the body, it works.

4. Return What Isn’t Yours

Before you do any protection practice, it’s worth doing the clearing first.

This is something I do formally in my Spirit Walking practice with clients. It means locating and returning energy that doesn’t belong to them. Try this simple version yourself.

Sit quietly. Scan your body.

Notice anything that feels foreign, heavy, not-quite-yours.

Set the intention: Whatever is here that doesn’t belong to me, I release it and return it with compassion to wherever it came from.

You don’t have to know whose it is. You don’t have to trace it back. Just let it go.

Then gather and pull your own energy back to yourself.

Wherever you left pieces of yourself today (could be in the conversation you keep replaying, in the person you’re worried about, in the conflict you can’t stop thinking about, etc.), call yourself back: I return to myself. My energy is mine.

Try this at the end of the day, especially after difficult interactions. Make it a hygiene practice, like washing your hands.

5. Your Relationship with Your Own Space

Your home is your energetic base camp. This one matters more than people realize.

I’m not talking about clearing it with smoke once and calling it done (though that has its place).

I’m talking about the ongoing practice of tending your space. What (and who!) you bring into it, how you move through it, whether it actually feels like yours.

A home that feels chaotic, stagnant, or crowded with unprocessed energy makes it harder to reset after you’ve been out in the world.

Your body can’t fully decompress if your space doesn’t signal safety.

Tend your space regularly. Move the stagnant air. Open windows. Physically clean before you energetically clear. The material and energetic are intertwined.

Light a candle with intention. Sound (a bell, a drum, your own voice) helps break up stuck energy faster than almost anything.

A Note for the People Who’ve Tried Everything

A Note for the People Who've Tried Everything

If you’ve genuinely been practicing and still feel unprotected, chronically drained, or like nothing holds, there are a few things worth looking at honestly.

Are you in chronic sympathetic activation?
I’ve been there. And it sucks.

If your nervous system is running on threat-detection (i.e. fight or flight) most of the time, no amount of crystals will fix it.

The work is really nervous system work. Breathwork, somatic practices, therapy, rest. The energetic and the physiological are the same system.

Do you actually have boundaries…not just energetically, but in your life?
Energetic protection practices aren’t a substitute for saying no to people.

They can support you, but they can’t do the relational work. If someone is draining you and you keep saying yes to them, you’re fighting uphill.

Is there something unresolved in your own field that keeps inviting interference?
This is the shadow work question, and it’s a hard one.

We tend to attract more of what we haven’t looked at.

This isn’t blame. It’s an invitation. Some of the most powerful protection work starts with turning toward your own wounds.

The Honest Truth About Energetic Protection

The Honest Truth About Energetic Protection

Real energetic protection isn’t a product you buy, a stone you carry, or a five-minute visualization you do before something hard. Those things can all help, but they’re not the heart of the thing.

It’s a practice. It’s a relationship. With your own body, your own energy, your own field.

The tools do matter. Crystals, smoke, sound, ceremony. these are real allies. But they work in concert with your own developed capacity. They amplify what’s already there.

Start with your nervous system. Ground in your body. Learn what your own energy feels like. Build from there.

And if you’ve been carrying things that don’t belong to you for so long that you don’t know where you end and other people begin…that’s the work. That’s the real work. And it’s absolutely possible.

If you want support in clearing and recalibrating your energy field, I offer Reiki and energetic clearing sessions at a distance. They’re both designed to work with exactly this type of stuff. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
